Herrmann cycling team from baiersdorf wants to go on the german tour

The anticipation is written all over stefan herrmann’s face. The team boss of the herrmann cycling team – and managing director of the eponymous baiersdorf company – has three goals for the 2019 season. First: "we want to be first in the bundesliga." Second: "we also have a title to defend." And above all: "we want to ride in the deutschland-tour."

The deutschland-tour is the only stage race of the cycling elite on german soil. Participation has not been possible for the herrmann cycling team so far. Last year’s field consisted of eleven teams with the world team license – the highest awarded by the world governing body UCI. These teams also take part in the major events around the world, such as the tour de france. In addition, there were six teams with the second-highest professional license ("professional continental") and four teams with the third-class continental license. Now the herrmann cycling team has one too.

"This step into the professional world means that we are also eligible to compete in rougher races", says team leader grischa janorschke. The race calendar now includes the tour de taiwan in march for example. "After last season’s success, the license was the logical consequence." A lot of paperwork and licensing fees of about 20000 euro had to be paid for it.

In the national cycling league, the team finished second in the team classification and also achieved a historic feat: the baiersdorf team won the german team time trial championship, the first french team to do so since RSG nurnberg in 1988. Last year, the second place in the bundesliga team ranking was enough for a wildcard to the deutschland-tour, but the license was missing. This year it should work: "the exact criteria for the wildcards will be published in the next two weeks", says janorschke. The tour runs from 29. August to 1. September.

Five new members of the team

To make sure the team succeeds, it has added new members: the U23 riders alexander tarlton, johannes adamietz, lennart jung and nils weispfennig are new to the team. In addition, manuel porzner (born 1996), who is already driving in the men’s classification. "We’ve already had our "wishful thinkers" there, says janorschke about the composition of the squad. At the official team presentation, tarlton, who comes from london, revealed that the other way around is also possible and caused a laugh in the audience: "i applied and apparently they wanted me. The drier it is and the higher the altitude, the more difficult it is."

The professional license does not mean, however, that the herrmann squad consists of professional drivers: "you have to think of it like in fubball", says the altenkunstadter janorschke. "Only that there the professional range further down reaches. We are now so to speak third league, but the whole thing is semi-professional." In fact, the team consists mainly of students, only 30-year-old florenz knauer has to combine his hobby with his job. What that means is made clear by teammate christopher hatz (27, student). His total distance on the bike in 2018: around 22,000 kilometers.
