Balancing act between justice and empathy

Balancing act between justice and empathy

Refugees. According to infratest dimap, this is the "problem to be solved" for the germans in 2017 number one. But: when it comes to the "personally most important" thing problem goes, refugees come in a distant fourth in a forsa poll – behind security, justice and jobs. A contradiction? No contradiction. The issue directly affects fewer rather than more, as a glance at the number of asylum seekers in our region proves: in upper franconia, for example, the number of new admissions continues to decline, having more than halved since 2015. There are currently around 7,500 asylum seekers living in the district, half of them in shared accommodation or the central reception facility in bamberg. Personally affected? Few can speak of that.
Nuchterne facts here, the personal there: the deportation of little ofeliya has also made the editors of this newspaper thoughtful. Rarely have discussions lasted so long at the morning conference – how to deal with this moving topic? A pro& contra with "completely right against "morally indefensible"? Showing a clear edge… Impossible in this difficult case. It remained with the commenting classification ("finally give me the quote").
Popular remains the topic, on facebook at our site is lively discussion. The majority rejects, as does the editorial team. A remarkable number of comments do not: we had to delete them because of racist or offensive content.
Whether refugees are still the number one topic or not, the case of little ofeliya shows that it moves people. And unfortunately also calls those on the plan, who lack the personal concern as well as any empathy.
